Review – Espers – III

Espers – III
Today we review the new album by folk sextet Espers called III. It’s not the band’s third album, as the title would have you believe, it’s actually their fourth. III is a follow up to 2006’s, and wait for it… II and was released on Drag City October 20th, 2009. Espers are psychics from the paranormal world and the odd name comes from the acronym ESP, or extrasensory perception. At least that’s what I thought until I realized I was getting my information from the wrong Wikipedia page. As it turns out, they aren’t psychic, at least not that I know of, and they’re actually from Philly. There’s apparently a psych-folk revival going on in the Philly scene that have taken a large cue from 60’s folk and made it all their own. Espers just happen to be knee deep in that scene. According to the band’s press release, for III, they have “attempted to create something that would be perhaps cheery at times, though that mark may have been missed.”

As always, the tracks below are listed in the order they appear on the podcast and the number is the track number on the album. If you click on the album cover, you can listen to the album via We7.com.

1. Can’t See Clear
5. That Which Darkly Thrives
10. Trollslända
3. Caroline
2. The Road of Golden Dust
